Barnstable High School Girls Hockey finished the 2009-10 Varsity season with a 10-4-5 record and a seventh consecutive trip to the post-season state tournament. JV finished the season with a 5-4-1 record. The entire organization would like to thank parents, fans, sponsors, advertisers, donors, and the wonderful community for their incredible support again this season. As we look forward to next season, 2010-11 tryouts start on Monday November 29, 2010.
As Bobby Orr once said; "Growing up, if I hadn't had sports, I don't know where I'd be. God only knows what street corners I'd have been standing on and God only knows what I'd have been doing, but instead I played hockey and went to school and stayed out of trouble. And hopefully we will also see that the lessons we're teaching - not only the fundamentals of hockey, but also the life values - are sinking in".
5th Annual Skate Night Draws Record 259 Girls
Barnstable High School Girls Ice Hockey sponsored the 5th Annual Skate Night on Thursday January 21, 2010 at the Hyannis Youth & Community Center in Hyannis. Skate Night offers Barnstable girls between the ages of 5-14 the opportunity to skate for free with players and coaches comprising the 2009-2010 Barnstable High School Girls Varsity & JV Ice Hockey Teams. All girls received free skating, free skate rental, free hot chocolate, a free goodie bag, and much more. The goal of this annual event is to encourage young girls in Barnstable to learn to skate and/or continue skating and maybe someday play on a Barnstable High School Girls Ice Hockey Team. No skating experience was necessary and no hockey equipment was required, only skates and a smile! A record 259 girls attended this year’s event and it was an outstanding success.

With a 5-1 win over Milton High School at the Bright Sports Center at Harvard University, the Barnstable Red Raiders won the MIAA Division II Girls Ice Hockey State Championship. Barnstable becomes the first Cape Cod team in history to win a state championship in girls ice hockey. The Red Raiders jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to first period goals by juniors Kristen Logan and Abby VanWormer. Those two goals were all that the Red Raiders would need. Milton scored in the first minute of the second period to make it 2-1, but Barnstable wasted no time and responded with three unanswered goals to bring the score to 5-1. Stephanie Scarpato scored two goals, and Michelle Manning added one, culminating a dominant season by Barnstable's formidable first line of Scarpato, Manning, and Katie Kirwan. Natalie Cohen stood out in net for Red Raiders and, with the championship, won her fifth career MIAA State Championship. Pivotal in Barnstable's win was its penalty kill, which was anchored by defensemen VanWormer, Claire Toffey, and Jessi Barron. The second line of Logan, Lynne Donoghue, and Lisa Cunningham also contributed to the penalty kill and managed to prevent Milton's Molly Golden, one of the state's leading scorers, from rushing the puck up the ice.
The State Champion Red Raiders would like to thank all their parents, coaches, siblings, friends, fans, teachers, school administrators, community members, and members of the press for their continued support
throughout this successful and memorable season.
